PGE and Ørsted have made the Final Investment Decision (FID) regarding the construction of the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm. This announcement has been eagerly awaited by the entire renewable energy industry for months. The project already has all the necessary permits and contracted supplies, but the final piece—securing financing—was still pending, along with the FID decision. The end of January marked a new chapter for Baltica 2, as the construction of the second offshore wind farm in Polish Baltic waters is now set to begin.
A Green Partnership of Great Value
The total project budget is estimated at approximately PLN 30 billion, with each partner holding an equal stake. PGE Group and Ørsted complement each other in various areas, and at this stage, both partners emphasize the great value they place on their collaboration.
“We have reached a point where mutual trust has been established, and we are confident that, with this partner, the project can be successfully completed. I hope that this mutual trust, reinforced by recent corporate decisions, demonstrates that we are capable of executing this project together, that we are committed to doing it together, and that we are a team capable of delivering such a large-scale project—leading companies from Poland and Denmark” said Dariusz Marzec, CEO of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna.
For both companies, the priority is not only strong collaboration but also safety.
“We will continue to work on improving health and safety conditions. We have a clear stance and a defined mission for the project, which is that everyone must return home safely” said Ulrik Lange, Managing Director of the Baltica 2 project at Ørsted.
First Power in 2027
Construction is scheduled to begin this year, with the first electricity from the Baltica 2 farm expected to be generated in the first half of 2027. All turbines are set to be operational by the second half of that year.
“Following the final investment decision, we can now proceed with construction. This means that, in 2025, we will begin preparing the seabed, which will include the removal of large rocks. In 2026, together with our contractors, we will start installing export cables, foundations, and offshore transformer stations. The next phase will involve turbine installation in 2027,” explained Ulrik Lange, Managing Director of the Baltica 2 project at Ørsted.
“Baltica 2 will be the largest renewable energy project ever built in Poland. It will generate 1.5 GW of green energy, enough to power 2.5 million Polish households starting in 2027. As part of this project, we will install 107 turbines at sea, each 250 meters tall—taller than the Palace of Culture. The turbines will be located about 40 km off the Polish coast. This is a significant challenge, but one we are fully prepared for,” said Agata Staniewska-Bolesta, Managing Director of Offshore Poland at Ørsted.
Baltica 2 is one of two key phases of the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm, alongside the equally groundbreaking Baltica 3 phase.
